Current research areas

Novel NMR methods, notably for quadrupolar nuclei

Much of my work entails the development of novel NMR techniques via a detailed understanding of the dynamics of nuclear spins during the NMR pulse sequences. I notably developed advanced NMR experiments to probe the local environments of quadrupolar nuclei, such as 27Al, 11B or 17O, which account for over 75% of all NMR-accessible nuclei. These novel techniques have been combined with cutting-edge technologies, including high magnetic fields, dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP, see below) and ultra-fast magic-angle spinning (MAS).

Representative publications:

DNP of materials

Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP), which is based on the microwave-driven polarization transfer from unpaired electrons to surrounding nuclei, has been shown to improve by one to three orders of magnitude the sensitivity of NMR experiments on materials under magic-angle spinning (MAS). I have been among the pioneers of DNP-NMR of materials. I have notably applied this technique to characterize the atomic-level structure of mesoporous materials and nanoparticles.

Representative publications:

Heterogeneous catalysts and porous materials

I have introduced sophisticated NMR methods to characterize heterogeneous catalysts and porous materials, including zeolites, metal-organic frameworks, amorphous silica-alumina and supported catalysts. These solid-state NMR experiments have notably provided key insights into the structure of the active sites and their interaction with reactants.

Representative publications:

Energy materials (battery, photovoltaics)

I have also employed solid-state NMR to probe the atomic-level structure of energy materials, including solid electrolytes and cathode materials for Li-ion batteries as well as hybrid perovskite-based photovoltaics.
