The international partnerships of UCCS are informal (for example, under the form of invitations exchanges) or more formalized. This is the case of the partnerships within the Henri Curien Program (PHC), but also of the PICS (International Projects for Scientific Cooperation), the IRNs (International Research Networks) and the International Associated Laboratories (LIA) under the aegis of the CNRS, these latter being the result of very advanced relations between a French laboratory and a - or less frequently a few - foreign strategic laboratory(ies). The International Joint Units (UMI), subsequently involve relations between academics and private partners working on common projects.

UCCS coordinates two LIAs and participates in a third of them. UCCS has further been nominated as "mirror site" of the UMI E2P2L.

International associated laboratories (LIA)

What is a LIA?

In order to structure collaboration between two research teams or laboratories (one in France and the other abroad) that already have joint publications, the creation of an International Associated Laboratory (LIA), a “laboratory without walls”, can be requested. The relationship between the two partners is formalized through a contract signed by the heads of both organizations, with provisions covering issues such as intellectual property rights. Human and material resources are pooled to carry out the project. Teams or laboratories associated through an LIA retain their separate autonomy, status, Director and location. The LIA activities are coordinated by two co-principal investigators and by a scientific steering committee.

LIAs are established for four years, possibly renewable once.

LIA NANOXCAT: Nano oxide-based catalysts for biomass valorisation

Founded in January 2018, the NANOXCAT LIA gathers the expertise of research teams from Hiroshima University (Prof. Masahiro Sadakane), Kanagawa University (Prof. Wataru Ueda) and UCCS (Prof. Sébastien Paul). The main concept of this collaboration is to associate the internationally recognized competencies of the two Japanese groups in terms of synthesis of new solid materials with unique surface reactivity properties (nano-oxides) with those of UCCS in terms of catalytic processes development and optimization. This will be done mainly in the field of biomass valorization in the frame of the so-called biorefineries.

LIA: Energy & Environment

Founded in January 2017, the Energy & Environment LIA, coordinated by Prof. Nasser Darabiha from E2MC lab (UPR CNRS 288 – Centrale-Supélec), aims at developing collaborative research works concerning the energy production and transformation in a view to reduce the environmental impact in this field. The optimization of the energy transformation, the reduction of the energy consumption and the production of energy by alternative non-polluting sources are the main topics of this program.  In this frame, the VAALBIO group of UCCS (Prof. Sébastien Paul, Dr. Robert Wojcieszak) is involved through collaborations with several Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro research teams in the development of catalytic process for biorefineries.

LIA MATSUCAT: Functionalized MATerials for SUstainable CATalytic and Related Applications

This collaborative project is focused on the development of inorganic and organic hierarchical functionalized materials and related applications in catalysis, electrochemistry, and as drug delivery. Particular attention is paid to the elaboration of PGMs and rare earths free materials recognized as critical materials due to their strategic importance. Various physicochemical characterizations are implemented to get a detail description at nanoscale of their functionalities. Different applications have been envisioned in the field of the environmental protection and the replacement of fossil by more renewable ressources.

UMI Mirror Site

What is a UMI?

A UMI is a full-fledged laboratory, as found in universities and research organizations. It is based in a single location, in France or abroad, and brings together researchers, students, postdocs, and support staff from CNRS and the partner institution(s). The Director of the UMI is jointly named by CNRS and the foreign partner institution(s).

A UMI is initially created for five years and can be renewed twice after evaluation of its activity.

Mirror Site of UMI E2P2L: Eco-Efficient Products and Processes Laboratory

"Eco-Efficient Products and Processes Laboratory" is at the interface between industry & academia, dedicated to Eco-Innovation for Sustainable Chemistry. The aim of this multi-disciplinary international team is to develop new eco-efficient products and processes capable of reducing our dependence on oil. This laboratory was set up in November 2011 in Shanghai and is a joint research unit (UMI 3464). In 2013, the University of Lille and the University of Fudan also joined this international research consortium, and UCCS has been appointed is a mirror site of E2P2L
